Nitrided Steel vs Stainless Steel — How to Choose
If you’re deciding between nitrided steel and stainless steel, think less about “which is better” and more about how you like to play and listen. Nitrided steel has a slightly shorter sustain and a more percussive, articulated sound — if you enjoy clear attacks, rhythmic playing, or often play outdoors or in hot environments, the harder nitrided surface holds up very well. Stainless steel, on the other hand, offers a longer, smoother sustain with a more flowing, meditative feel, and it’s extremely easy to care for — it’s highly resistant to rust and usually needs little to no maintenance.
Both materials used in our handpans receive special surface treatments, so you don’t need to worry too much about rust or upkeep. Stainless steel is the most carefree, while nitrided steel may benefit from occasional oiling and wipe-downs. In the end, many players simply choose based on the sound character they’re drawn to and the colour that resonates with them most — both options are durable, stable, and designed for everyday enjoyment.

Absolutely love it. Tiffany's customer service was a brilliant experience. So helpful, knowledgeable and relatable. I love my new handpan! I have wanted one for 12 years, yet never played one, so I have begun with a beginners. On my first playing I experienced the drummers high which I had so missed since having to abruptly stop playing djembe due to an injury several years ago. I am delighting in my handpan time, it feels really lovely and relaxing. Tiffany went the extra mile to ensure my piece met my colour expectations. I enjoy looking at it as well as playing. I am feeling very grateful and blessed.
