The kalimba is modelled after the ancient African musical instrument called mbira. The varying styles of kalimba and mbira have endured for thousands of years and have had numerous layouts, designs, and tunings. As a result, this instrument produces a warm ethereal sound that feels "like nature in a box". And most importantly, the experience of playing the kalimba will genuinely help you to relax and unwind. This article talks about why the kalimba is a fantastic instrument for everyone!
Need a little help in choosing the right kalimba? Here is a little kalimba buyer's guide made just for you.
Made with high-quality mahogany. The solid wood structure provides a well-balanced long lasting sound. Kalimba keys are made with selected ore steel bars, giving the tines high strength and durability.
Size 18cm x 13cm x 3.3cm
Weight 450g
This Kalimba arrives conveniently pre-tuned in the key of C, allowing you to delve into play immediately upon receipt of your order. In addition, the Kalimba can stay in tune for an extensive period, meaning you won't have to worry about tuning when you're just starting to learn. Additionally, it can be retuned to any other scale you prefer.
No musical background? No problem at all! The notes engraved on the tines make following sheet music a breeze. To play, simply hold the instrument between your palms, then use your thumbs to pluck the keys. You will have a beautiful melody in no time!
Flat Board vs Hollow vs Acrylic Kalimba
Flat Board Kalimba
Bright, clear, and very defined sound — great for clean melodies.
Hollow Kalimba
Warm tone with longer sustain. The most popular choice, with a soft “wah-wah” effect when you play around the soundhole.
Acrylic Kalimba
Clear tone, but quieter. Acrylic doesn’t resonate like wood, so the sound is softer.
Does Wood Type Matter?
Wood type makes a small difference, but shape matters more. The design of the kalimba has a bigger impact on the overall sound.
Which One Should You Choose?
All kalimbas are played the same way.

A great little piece. I don’t have a whole lot of musical experience, but finding a song I know and trying it out brings a surprising amount of satisfaction. It comes already tuned and ready to play and everyday I look forward to coming home to play it.
Lovely little instrument. Nice sound and can't wait to practice.
A nice looking kalimba. Came in tune and ready to play. The oly thing is that the end pegs make less sound but that is to be expected with thus shape of kalimba
Purchased while home with the flu and I'm completely in love. Arrived very quickly and so carefully packed. The only thing more beautiful than the aesthetic is the way it sounds, such a gorgeously rich, melodic tone, and so well suited to so many songs I love, I started with the music box tune from Labyrinth and have moved onto various Disney songs and classic rock. I've had it just over a week now and haven't gone a day without playing it. So thrilled with my new hobby.
Thank you, they are perfect. I am very pleased. Highly recommend it. <3
I like the Kalimba, it's compact and mobile. I am new to Kalimba music just started playing so, long way to go :-) Customer service has been very good and supportive. Keep up the good work 'Little Kalimba Shop'. Cheers
I am new to the kalimba. I am learning it quite quickly and finding it very rewarding as I connect with sound and nature.
This Kalimba has a very nice, clear tone and it’s easier for me to pick out tunes on this version with less keys. It came with some extras too, which was a nice surprise. The shop is very good to deal with and I received it quite quickly.
This kalimba looks gorgeous and sounds beautiful! Very easy to use and tune. I ordered the blue one, but it does look slightly more green in person - still a lovely colour! Very happy.
Love love love it. I think the Kalimba is better than the lyre but I don’t regret either buy!
It’s nice and beautiful I enjoy playing it. However I ordered a blue kalimba but I received a green one. That’s a bit disappointed !

Bought this for my kids to play something musical without giving me a headache lol. This is a lovely instrument even if you don’t no what you’re doing 😅
Amazing! Absolutely love it
I have no experience in music but it’s getting easy to learn and it sounds lovely. The owners answered my questions when I needed help with the instrument and the packaging was beautiful. Kalimba had slight scratches on the keys/wood but it’s in good condition and i love it
What a beautiful instrument! Easy to learn and it sounds wonderful!
The best gift I could have wished for from my partner!! I am very satisfied and impressed with the sound quality and wooden texture, the packaging it comes in is also very gorgeous… Even came with some cute little extras! You’ve really outdone yourselves and brought one of the biggest smiles to my face this Christmas season :)
I am not a music person at all, but have always been curious about learning (as I think it’s a great outlet/calming). And so far my experience has been positive! Learning the Kalimba has been really fun and rewarding. The instrument came with a guide booklet, tuning tools and beginner stickers for easy setup and learning. It’s honestly been so fun!
Fast shipping, packed well, kalimba is as described and sounds great!
Lightweight kalimba, easy to hold. The hollow box gives the sound a nice resonance. The first 10 tines from the center spreading out have a longer sustain, the last 6 tines (3 on each side) have little resonance. Sound is warm. Perfect for beginners but do not expect great sounds from the higher octaves.
I have yet to give it to my grandaughter for her birthday, but I know that she will love it. Thankyou. It will be a great gift.
The Kalimba I purchased was a birthday present for a young 8 year old friend, daughter of a musical family. It was received with delight and I understand has been enjoyed for many hours. As Parent's are musicians, thought it an appropriate gift for a young child to learn. As an elderly person, I take great delight in watching the wonder of discovery by young folk when introduced to beautiful things like music, nature and the wonderful sounds and beauty around us. Thank you. Geri :)
Loved by all
Delighted with the Kalimba I purchased, prompt delivery and it was very well packaged. The quality seems really good. So now all I need to do is start playing it, it’s also very therapeutic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏼
Looks and sounds so beautiful and whimsical 😊
Perfect to learn on.
Thank you, the Kalimba arrived promptly which was helpful as it was a birthday gift for a 10 year old. It's beautifully made and has a lovely sound. I think it's a nice way to introduce a musical instrument to child.
My son is a savant musician, he plays 10 instruments. I knew he didn’t have a kalimba . He was thrilled with it.
It was a gift for a 12yr old girl who loves music. Of all the gifts she got this one she picked up and played with the most. It is a very intuitive instrument so she was able to get a tune going straight away. Loved that it was already tuned and ready to play out of the box.
Well made & beautiful sound. My 9yr old loves it. Quick to learn & play songs. Thoughtful accessories & instructions. Fast delivery.
This was a Christmas gift for our dear musician friend. It's not overstating that he absolutely loved it. Great quality and amazing associated service, lessons, information and back up. Would definitely highly recommend. Thank you.
Love it, well tuned, nice in hand and very pretty. Colors are like in the picture so all good.
Perfect as a gift. My cousin loves it. Fast postage. Sound of the kalimba is perfect for relaxation when playing it. Perfect size for hand. New instrument to learn. I love it.
Beautiful product in beautiful packaging. Creates a lovely sounds and is a fun little fidget as well as mindful instrument. The instructions could use some rewording and clarifying, but a beautiful product overall
They look and sound lovely, I’m looking forward to giving them to my granddaughters for Xmas.
